This week, First United sent out a wonderful justice-focused Advent and Christmas calendar, created by Rev. Lauren Sanders, Spiritual Care Manager (Prairie Band Potawatomi/mshkodéni bodewadminwen, Kickapoo Nation of Kansas/kiikaapoa, African American/Black).
The calendar is packed with information on the Doctrine of Discovery, and the harmful influence and impact it has had and continues to have on our theology and laws in Canada and around the world. The calendar looks at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action 45, 46, 47 and how we can respond.
Advent is a time of spiritual preparation. While blue is often used now, the color of Advent in the sanctuary was once purple- a color signifying repentance and renewal. How appropriate then, to have a daily opportunity for justice and reconciliation education, to renew our commitment and understanding.
Here is the link for the calendar to download for your personal use. May it bring you inspiration and a desire to ‘prepare the Way’ for harmony, hope and healing in Advent.
Thank you 1st United!
